Finding Middle Ground in a Polarized Society

ITBS Diversity Faces

In an increasingly polarised society of clashing ideas and rising tensions, we find ourselves at a noisy, fragmented crossroad. International Think Big Summit 2024 aims to cut through the chaos, exploring the power of Middle Ground to bridge understanding within oneself and among others.

Crossroads Topics

International Think Big Summit 2024 Malaysian Identity

Crossroad #1
[Diversity ⇔ Unity]

67 Years Later: Can Diversity Finally Enhance the National Unity that Malaysia Envisions?

What is a crossroad without its differently headed roads coinciding at one place? What is Malaysia without its medley of vibrant colours jam-packed in a single nation? Yet “Malaysia, Truly Asia” appears to be only a facade, masking the persistent calls for justice and belonging.

  • In return for a strong national unity, it seems common and reasonable that a great degree of homogeneity is required. Or is that not necessarily the case?
  • Is “unity within diversity” really possible in Malaysia?
International Think Big Summit 2024 War

Intersection #2
[Just War ⇔ Pacifism]

Just War or Just Wrong: Plotting our Moral Compass in the Palestine-Israel Struggle

When a nation trespasses on another’s territory, war erupts. This fight over and for borders—to establish a home—has been the centrepiece of many battles, including the endless Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

  • But to what extent can a country’s self-defence and need for independence justify atrocious violence?
  • At the same time, in a world where the primal need for a sovereign haven rules, might pacifism as well just be a naive dream?

Crossroad #2
[Just War ⇔ Pacifism]

Just War or Just Wrong: Plotting our Moral Compass in the Palestine-Israel Struggle

The systematically-drawn roadlines dictate which traffic area belongs to who. Once you challenge them, people can get angry and retaliate. Similarly, when a nation trespasses on another’s territory, war erupts.

International Think Big Summit 2024 Truth

Crossroad #3
[Objective Truths ⇔ Manufactured Truths]

The Fault in Our Narratives: Seeking Truth(s) in a World of Mass Produced Lies

Amid a rush of information (and misinformation), thanks to technology and power interests, it is becoming exasperatingly challenging to discern which narratives are manufactured and which are true. We are left paralysed at the crossroads, wondering where to pursue the elusive truth.

  • How do the powers that be control public narratives?
  • How can we seek reality and truth among the confusion of conflicting narratives?
International Think Big Summit 2024 Art

Intersection #4
[Traditional Art ⇔ Social Media]

From Museums to Memes: How Infinite Scroll is Changing Art Forever

Art is often said to transcend time and space: the Mona Lisa’s enigmatic gaze holds as much mystery today as it did in the 16th century. But can the same be said of the “Surprised Pikachu” meme, or perhaps Uncle Roger’s signature ‘Haiyaa!’ in his parody-style TikTok videos?

  • What is art, and more importantly, what defines Malaysian art in a culture of infinite scroll?
  • Could we be facing a dearth of genuine art production and art appreciation, let alone the ability to philosophise “what is art”?

Art is often said to transcend time and space: the Mona Lisa’s enigmatic gaze holds as much mystery today as it did in the 16th century. But can the same be said of the “Surprised Pikachu” meme, or perhaps Uncle Roger’s signature ‘Haiyaa!’ in his parody-style TikTok videos? In a world where we race through crossroads of hurried existence, we would like to take a moment and explore:

  • What is art, and more importantly, what defines Malaysian art in a culture of infinite scroll?
  • Could we be facing a dearth of genuine art production and art appreciation, let alone the ability to philosophise “what is art”?

International Think Big Summit 2024 Loneliness

Crossroad #5
[Hyperconnectivity ⇔ Loneliness]

Hyperconnected Yet Loneliest Generation Ever: Or Secretly the Truest-to-Self?

The light turns green. Dozens of pedestrians passing by. Shoulders brushing against each other. But no one stops, and no words are exchanged. Despite living in the pinnacle of hyper-individualization and hyperconnectivity, Generation Z (and arguably all other generations) is commonly dubbed the “Loneliest Generation”.

  • Is there anything abnormal about loneliness?
  • Can it sometimes be a good thing?
